Lava Creek Lodge was built in May of 2019 and opened its doors to guests that same year. After years of research, planning, and dreaming, founder Phil Byrd turned his vision into reality. Drawing on his experience working at other lodges across Alaska, Phil kept the best elements and left the rest behind—creating a small, personal, and unforgettable experience in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness.
Phil envisioned a place where guests are known by name, not by room number. It’s the remote location, the personalized service, and the deep-rooted hospitality that set Lava Creek Lodge apart.
A Family-Run Lodge with a Personal Touch
Owned and operated by Phil Byrd, his wife, and their daughter, Lava Creek Lodge is a true family business—there are no corporate owners here. The Byrds are hands-on with every detail of the day-to-day operation, making sure each guest feels at home.
Phil came to Alaska right after high school and began guiding both saltwater and freshwater fishing trips on Kodiak Island. Two years later, he moved to Bristol Bay, where he spent four more years guiding fishermen and hunters. Phil has held a 6-pack captain’s license since he was 18, and has been a licensed commercial pilot for both land and sea since 2005.

Mike Tappero – Head Guide / Manager
Phil met Mike over 20 years ago while guiding at another lodge. Mike has guided in Alaska on and off for more than 15 years and joined Lava Creek Lodge in 2020 after the pandemic shut down tourism in Hawaii. His vast experience, calm leadership, and sharp attention to detail help keep the lodge running smoothly every day.
Betty Tappero – Chef
Betty is Mike’s wife and the creative force behind the incredible meals at Lava Creek Lodge. A trained pastry chef, Betty brings a unique flair to every dish—from hearty salmon dinners to perfectly cooked prime rib and her famous “crock nights.” Her cooking is just one more reason you’ll never go hungry here.
